Nouns in Innu can take different grammatical markings. These include the following :
- gender, which marks animate and inanimate
- number, which marks singular and plural
- obviation, which marks third persons
- the locative, which marks location
- the possessive, which marks possession
- the vocative, used when addressing someone
- the diminutive, which marks that someone or something is small or implies endearment
There are two types of nouns: proper nouns and common nouns. Nouns derived from other grammatical categories are called nominalisations.
